APDIM Addresses Webinar on Strengthening Collaboration for Disaster and Climate Resilience: “Enhancing Collaboration between NSOs and Disaster Management for Smarter Disaster and Climate Resilience”

13 October 2024

A webinar organized by the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) took place earlier this week to explore the essential collaboration between national statistical offices (NSOs) and disaster management.

As disasters increasingly impact lives and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, the need for accurate disaster and climate-related statistics has never been more urgent. Timely data is essential across all phases of the disaster risk management cycle, from assessment to recovery.

Ms. Letizia Rossano, the director of the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), delivered opening remarks that underscored the organization’s commitment to bridge the gap between national statistics and disaster information management. She stated that the theme of the webinar lay at the heart of APDIM’s mission, which aims to equip national and local administrators with vital insights into risks and exposures, enabling informed decision-making to mitigate vulnerabilities and facilitate transboundary discussions.

Mr. Mostafa Mohaghegh, Senior Coordinator at APDIM, also presented an overview of the centre’s strategic work, highlighting the importance of identifying gaps in information management for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and the necessity of comprehensive data governance frameworks. He emphasized the need for data accuracy and accessibility among stakeholders, as well as a shared understanding of critical concepts to effectively bridge existing gaps and mainstream DRR into development plans.

The webinar further explored essential topics such as the necessity of an integrated statistical framework, the development of tracking and analytical tools, capacity building to foster a resilient ecosystem, and the role of digitalization in enhancing DRR strategies.

The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where participants shared insights and recommendations for strengthening collaboration between NSOs and disaster management entities.

The session lasted two hours.
