Addressing the Challenges of Sand and Dust Storms (SDS) in Cities: Strategies for Resilience and Sustainability

APDIM, in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Municipality of Tehran, a megacity with 13 million people - organized a seminar on “Addressing the Challenges of Sand and Dust Storms (SDS) in Cities: Strategies for Resilience and Sustainability”. The Mayor of Tehran, Mr. Alireza Zakani, alongside mayors from Iranian cities affected by sand and dust storms, including Isfahan, Khorramabad, Hamedan, Saveh, Zahedan, Arak, and Natanz participated in the event. Senior officials from line ministries and national agencies, including senior representatives from Iran’s Department of Environment, the Meteorological Organization (IRIMO), the national committee to combat sand and dust storms, and Disaster risk reduction experts also were in attendance.

APDIM’s Director, Ms. Letizia Rossano, delivered opening remarks, highlighting the importance of collaboration amongst municipal administrations affected by the same hazard and emphasized how this experience could be replicated internationally, bringing together cities in the Asia-Pacific region affected by sand and dust storms.

More than 70% of Iran’s population is exposed to medium-to-high air pollution related to sand and dust storms.
