In 2022, the ESCAP annual session endorsed the Regional Plan of Action on Sand and Dust Storms in Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP/78/12/Add.1) The Regional Plan of Action provides a strategic framework and reference for countries in the region to take action at the national and regional levels, in the context of multi-hazard disaster risk reduction, to reduce the negative impact of sand and dust storms and identify anthropogenic measures that could contribute to or mitigate their formation and intensity. The Regional Plan of Action also supports the countries of the region to collectively tackle this environmental challenge within the context of disaster risk reduction. The meeting in July provided the opportunity to policymakers and experts to exchange insights and expertise and explore effective measures for implementing the Regional Plan of Action.
Member states highlighted the need to identify specific occurrences of sand and dust storms at regional and sub-regional levels to enhance collaboration among affected countries.
The outcomes of July meeting were further used to support and facilitate regional cooperation to reduce the risk and negative impacts of sand and dust storms including in the International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran on 9-10 September 2023.
