Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS)

Sources: United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs; European Union; United Nations Operational Satellite Applications Programme; United Nations Institute for Training and Research

The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) provides a database containing the occurrence and severity of impact for previous disasters. This includes earthquake and tsunami hazards (reliable since 2002), floods (reliable since 2006), and cyclones (reliable since 2011) globally.

Users can narrow the database by hazard type, time period, severity and/or countries affected, to view a map of relevant hazards. These can then be selected, to view information about the hazard such as timelines and graphs of aftershocks, and information about the impacts such as population exposure, affected provinces, affected populated places and affected critical infrastructure, as well as maps of hazard impacts. There is also information available regarding the media coverage of the hazard, including analysis of social media and news articles. Users can also access further resources such as scientific data, model results and other services, as links are listed for each hazard.
